Introduction
India is the largest country in the Indian Subcontinent in the south
of Asia. Though it is the seventh largest country in the world by
area, it is the second largest populated. It is also an extremely diverse country with vast
differences in geography, climate, culture and ethnicity across its
expanse.
Economy
The currency of India is Indian National Rupee (INR). It has the
world’s 12th largest economy – and the third largest in Asia behind
Japan and China – with total GDP of around $691 billion in Year
2004. The United States is India’s largest trading partner.
Bilateral trade in Year 2004 was $21.7 billion.
People and Culture
India occupies only 2.4% of the world’s land area, but it supports
over 15% of the world’s population. Almost 33% of Indians are
younger than 15 years of age. About 70% of the people live in more
than 550,000 villages and the remainder live in more than 200 towns
and cities.
