Introduction
Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia. It consists of over 13,000
islands. The main islands are Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Irian
Jaya and Java.
Economy
Indonesia’s official currency is the Indonesia Rupiah. The major
industries found in Indonesia include food processing, major
vehicles and consumer durables. The annual Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) growth average 7% from year 1987-1997. In year 1998,
Indonesia experienced a negative GDP growth of 13.7% and
unemployment rate rose to 15-20%. GDP growth was 4.3% in year 2002,
4.5% in year 2003 and 5.1% in year 2004.
People and Culture
Indonesia is the world’s fourth – most populous nation. The island
of Java is the most densely populated area in the world, which has
more than 107 million people living in an area the size of New York
State. Bahasa Indonesia (a form of Malay) is the national language
of Indonesia since independence. However, many local languages are
playing vital role in many areas.
